NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils

Gorgeously glossy, intensely hydrating. NARS takes everything beloved about its Velvet Matte Lip Pencil – the convenience of a pencil with the application of a lipstick in a jumbo-size crayon design – then swaps the matte formula for one that lends lips luminosity. Available in six beautifully glazed shades, the Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils feature a lightweight formula that is enriched with Vitamin E plus a blend of moisture-rich hyaluronic spheres for a lustrous look that’s exceptionally rich.

It doesn’t get glossier than this.

NARS

In conjunction with my impressions on the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils I wrote a week ago, I would also like to share with you my thoughts of the newly released NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils. Here, I will also be sharing my thoughts about the formula and 3 of the colours I have, including some lip swatches as well.

There are 6 shades available at the moment and I have chosen New Lover, Happy Days and Frivolous.

THE FORMULA & PACKAGING

The formula: The formula feels slightly thicker as compared to NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. They are a little sticker too. Feels more like a lip balm as they are pretty sheer. I find  that this formulation is better on dry lips as it doesn’t enhance the lines and dryness of the lips. In fact, these pencils are quite moisturizing on the lips. Being this sheer, I would have expected a shorter lasting power but these pencils impressed me – they stayed for a good couple of hours. However, these pencils kind of adhere to the lips (if you know what I mean) - making it difficult to remove with a tissue, I had to use a makeup cleanser.

The packaging: These pencils come in the signature NARS rubber caps which goes on rather tightly but you got to be careful, you don’t want it destroying your makeup bag. However, it is a pencil which needs to be sharpen regularly. It’s slim and light, very handy for all occasions. It would have been perfect if it comes with a proper closure which clicks, keeps the worries of cap getting loose away. And if it’s one of those crayons which doesn’t require any sharpening, those which turns up like an eyeliner.

THE SHADES & APPLICATION TIPS

All pictures below taken indoor with flash, wearing the same makeup – check out Look In Iron Maiden if you are interested.

Size and thickness of these pencils are perfect for application. I don’t have to reach out to my lip brushes at all. Although the NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils are pretty sheer, their colours and individual characteristics do come through. I usually apply them on its own but if my lips are feeling a little too dry, I use the lip balm before colouring. Generally, the texture of this product is quite consistent between the 3 colours I have. Smooth and glides onto the lips with no problems at all.

I like to start applying from the center of the lips and spread outwards. Layer over for more coverage and colour as needed. Avoid blotting with a tissue as this product leans towards the stickier side and apply lip balm prior to these pencils if you wish.

New Lover is a gorgeous gold infused strawberry pink colour which is super flattering under the light. The lip swatches above doesn’t quite justify the richness of this shade. The gold coming through the pink is remarkably stunning. This is my favourite shade amongst the lot and it’s the most opaque one too.

Happy Days is a pink coral infused with gold shimmer colour which gives off a healthy and natural glow. The gold shimmer is very subtle, merely noticeable - probably due to the lack of contrast between the base and shimmer? I like this colour but don’t love, it’s a pretty shade for any day, any occasion, any time.

Frivolous is an iridescent seashell pink colour which is the sheer-est of them three. It gives off a very natural glow and shine to the lips, very close to the colour of my lips.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about the NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils. I would love to like them as much as the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils but sadly, I don’t. I feel that these pencils are too sheer for my liking and I can do without them – there is nothing special (about the formula) and unique (in terms of the shades) about them that impressed me. They are more like a hybrid between a lipstick and gloss but doesn’t quite shine like a gloss. If you are thinking of giving these pencils a go, I suggest you test the colours and texture on your lips before purchasing – that is, if there is a NARS store near you. For those thinking of purchasing online, google for more swatches but if you ask me, out of the 3 colours I featured above, New Lover is probably the most impressive shade.

Thank you for reading and hope this post helped.

  1. Frivolous looks beautiful on you. I like all the shades but really wish they would include a sharpener or make it a twist up pencil to reduce waste.

  2. Hi Joey
I recently bought 3 of these – New Lover, Happy Days and Baroque. As I was just randomly looking through your blog, I didn’t realised you already had a post on these :P Anyways, I love these babies although there were mixed reviews on them. Of the 3 shades that I bought, my favourite is Happy Days, as it look the best on me :)

  3. hi Joey,

can you share whether you bought the NARS pencil sharpener to sharpen the lip pencils?
If not what are you using to sharpen them?
I am not sure if i should buy the sharpener via Sephora.com

    Thanks :)

  4. Do these have the typical smell that NARS lipsticks and glosses have? I find it an awful almost burnt plastic sort of smell and can’t bear to use them, but was wondering if these are better.
