My Skincare Routine

Good morning everyone, how are you feeling today?

I have this post in my drafts’ folder for quite some time now and I am determined to finish it. This entry is all about my skincare routine, products that I am using at the moment. Prior to reading rest of this entry, do note that I am not recommending any of the products featured in this post because what works for me, might not work for you. And I feel that skincare products are the most sensitive and subjective items to discuss.

I have spent a lot of time, effort and money searching for the right skincare products for myself. And I am still searching for better ones!!

My rule of thumb through my experiences is “Listen to your skin“. They are many products out there promising every thing but you got to spend a few minutes analysing your skin – see what your skin really need, what are your main concerns and you want to achieve.

We must all agree that getting ready in the morning can be tedious. Not to mention applying all the skincare and makeup before going off to work. And beating the morning traffic. So, I try to keep my morning routine as minimal as possible by using as little products as I can but still achieve the same effectiveness. I am someone who must shower and wash my hair every morning, that’s my wake up call apart from a cup of latte. I usually start the day off with a warm shower and rinse off, from head to toe with cold water. I find that by doing so, pores are tighter and hair is shinier. It’s some basic science really, hot = expand and cold = contract. Is it just me or do you have the same practice too?

  • CLARINS Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Cottonseed for Normal or Combination Skin
  • CLARINS Toning Lotion Alcohol-Free with Camomile/Iris
Camomile isfor Normal or Dry Skin and Iris is for Combination or Oily Skin
  • LA ROCHE-POSAY Hydraphase XL Legere
  • CLARINS UV Plus HP Day Screen High Protection SPF 40

I normally wash my face in the shower and apply toner straight after I jump out of the shower. I let my skin absorb the toner while getting dressed and pat on a thin layer of moisturizer. While waiting for the moisturizer to sit in, I get my hair done. Apply sun screen and start my makeup routine. I like to take a break in between products, say 3-5 mins for my skin to fully absorb the product before applying another. It feels less cakey and heavy instead of layering one after another. I feel that my makeup wears a lot better too throughout the day.

When night falls, my skincare routine gets a little more complicating. After removing my makeup, I double-wash with a milk cleanser followed by a foaming cleanser. I need to ensure all traces of makeup is removed before going to bed. Leaving excess makeup on is very bad for the skin because it clogs pores. Depending on the skin condition I have, I usually use combination 1 on most days and combination 2 over the weekends. Due to the large amount of time I am in air-conditioned environment, I am using a hydrating serum to replenish my dehydrated skin.

COMBINATION 1

Besides my daily day and night skincare routine, I alternate my facial and silk pill every month. I also apply various masks every week. And before I end this entry, I would like to share my past and present skin condition with you so you can paint a better picture.

THE PAST

I suffered from acne when I was in highschool and I have tried so many products, from drug store to high-end brands just to recover. But what really helped me was several sessions of facial treatments. And moving to the UK for my degree helped tremendously, guess it’s the weather that helped control the amount of oil I had. I never had a skincare routine until I saw improvement in my skin from the acne I suffered. It was horrifying and I started caring for my skin more simply because I didn’t want to go through the whole process again.

THE PRESENT

I have dry skin that produces excess oil to nourish the skin thus I use a lot of hydrating products. I have sensitive skin prone to redness but it’s getting a lot better in recent years from the facials and treatments I went for. A few months ago, I had dry patches around my forehead and it’s recovering very well ever since I started using CLARINS HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase.

So, here is my skincare routine. Hope it’s not too much for the morning and thank you for reading.

What is your skincare routine like?

  1. CLARINS HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase — my younger sister is a big fan of that too, and she recently started using the facial oil too.
And high five to Clarins junkie too! 🙂

How’s the EL pore minimising products? Effective?

    thanks for sharing, Joey!

    • You are welcome Sophia.
When I started using the EL Idealist, I loved it and that’s the reason I purchased their Boosting Lotion.
After a while the effect seems to become more gradual.
I guess it’s a long-term product to use, takes 1-2 years or more to tell?

  2. Hi Joey,

    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Have you tried tried Sulwhasoo basic line?
I have had very bad acne in the past, tried seeing so many derms and results were so so.
Tried La Mer, not bad, but too ex.
I have an ultra sensitive skin that get reds very easily, and oily around T-zone, and dry cheek and forehead.
Ever since I tried Sulwhasoo, my skin has never been better. 🙂
I am currently using the first serum, balancing water and balancing emulsion. Very good I must say.
And as for cleanser, I have used Clarins Gentle Cleanser for years! 🙂 It’s my HG cleanser.
Also, the eye gel from Clarins, its very very good. I have been using it since my JC days. Haha.

    • Hi Ros,
      How are you?
Thank you for sharing your skincare faves!!
I have not tried Sulwhasoo, will look into them after reading your comment.
Could probably pick up some skincare from them when I visit HK next week =)
La Prairie has amazing skincare products, esp their hydrating serum but it’s too rich for me.

  3. Hi Joey,

I have been your silent reader for a while. 🙂
And I just couldn’t resist leaving a comment for this post.
Yes, you should definitely try Sulwhasoo.
But, the herbal-ish ginseng smell may not be for everyone, although it faints after the lotion has absorbed. 🙂
So I am fine with it. Haha.
HK is like a land of skincare, cosmetics, you name it they have it.
And Joey, you are one of the most hardworking bloggers around. 🙂
I really enjoy seeing new post whenever I visit your blog.
From the latest skincare products to makeups!
Keep up the good work. 🙂

  4. Hi Joey, I have dry skin that produces excess oil too. Will applying a moisturizer for dry skin help with the oiliness? How would you know if it’s too rich? Thank you so much for your help!

    • Hi Kate,
Try hydrating moisturizers, oil-free formula would be great.
Use a small amount of product, rub it between your palms and gently pat onto the skin instead of using the tradional dotting method (a dot on your cheeks, forehead etc. and blend).
For me, when a product is too rich, I tend to break out and have “oil bubbles” especially when it comes to eye cream/balm.
It usually happens within the next few days.

  5. Hi Joey, it’s great that you share our skin care routine; Mine changes too frequently as i am constantly trying new products ( bless my skin & my wallet ).

You’re a Clarins fan then, have you try its daily energiser range ? The cleanser smells lovely & really foamy, as good as gentle foaming cleanser.

Oh, I knew that you spend your university days in UK.

I guess your next post would be your weekend regime telling us about all the scrubs & masks & treatment products. ( No pressure )

    • My skincare routine changes every 2-3 years, before Clarins, it was Biotherm and La Mer.
I have used Biotherm for 4 years!!
Since late last year (remember my first Clarins purchase?) I have been using them.
Yes, I am trying to come up with a series of My … … so I can round everything up!!
