Hello everyone, seems like I haven’t created a look for quite some time. Today, I have an extremely easy look for you. A reader requested for a dark lip look which can be incorporated for work a while ago – Mel, I hope this look will work for you. Personally, I think by keeping rest of the face simple, even with a darker lip is work friendly unless you are working in a very conservative industry.
For face: I went for something clean and polished. Because I will be using a darker lip colour, to avoid looking too gothic, I wanted to add some radiance to the skin. I prepped my entire face with Chanel Le Blanc de Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base. You can keep your skin looking more matte by skipping the primer – use a less illuminating one.
For foundation, try to pick one that’s natural and closest to the colour of your neck and chest, this will also minimise the chances of looking too vampy. I chose Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation SPF 15 PA ++, conceal dark circles and spots with Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit and set with Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder. I used a little Benefit Powderflage under the eyes as well.
For eyes: I defined my brows lightly with my usual Chanel Perfect Brows. Make sure they are neat and groomed, don’t go for anything too dark, keep them natural. Use any black eyeliner, best if they are waterproof, to line your upper inner waterline and fill in the gaps between your lashes. This will help enlarge your eyes without looking like you are actually wearing anything. Skip the false eyelashes if you are comfortable with just mascara. For me, I have very short lashes so I chose to use a natural pair of falsies – just to amp up the look slightly.
I have also added a thin layer of Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow in Crushed Silver from the Bobbi Brown Black Ruby Sparkle Eye Palette (reviewed here) all over the lids. You can also skip the eyeshadow if you wish – lightly powder over your lids to even up the discolouration, if any.
For cheeks & lips: I added a touch of Make Up For Ever HD Blush in #5 before I set my foundation then I layered Shu Uemura Glow On Blushers in M Soft Pink 335 over. I also used Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Rumour to contoured my cheek bones lightly and Bobbi Brown Party Shimmer Brick to highlight.
I think Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Colour in Black Cherry 50 is perfect for this look. It’s dramatic enough but not-too-much. You can also tone it down by applying a generously amount of lip balm prior to applying the lipstick. Here, I have a thin layer of lip balm and 2 layers of lipstick applied with a lip brush.
Thank you for reading, happy mid-week.

Joey! What a lovely look! Thanks for posting. I love the Ardell lashes, I want to try them too. I love the lip colour too.
Thank you Jacqueline =)
Ardell False Eyelashes are very good, I totally recommend them!!
The combination of the slightly sparkly eyelids with the black cherry lipstick is gorgeous 🙂 You’re so creative.
Thank you Fieran =)
thankyou joey! 🙂
love this look! will try it out on my own 🙂
You are welcome Mel =)
Glad to know you like the look and am so sorry for the long wait!!
It’s okay! 🙂 I appreciate the effort 🙂 just wondering if I’m wearing black rimmed specs, do I still have to do any eye makeup to go with the dark lips?
Hi Mel,
If you are wearing black rimmed specs, I think you can do without any eye makeup.
You might be able to get away by curling your lashes and add a thin coat of mascara – just to “open” up the eyes slightly =)
Thank you Joey 🙂
My lashes are quite sparse, you reckon I should put falsies or leave my eyes bare?
I love false eyelashes and I think you should but make sure they are very natural and nothing too long – don’t wanna wipe the lenses on your specs!!
Thanks! By the way, have you tried Shiseido’s Perfect Foundation brush with any water resistant liquid foundation such as MUFE’s mat velvet before?
Hi Mel,
I am afraid that the Shiseido Perfection Foundation Brush has been sitting in my drawer for quite some time!!
Your comment reminded me, I need to start playing with it..
Hi Joey (: Do you normally apply the foundation first, then concealer, then loose/pressed powder?
Hi Stephanie,
I apply my foundation first, followed by concealer and set them with loose powder or pressed powder =)
