Kiehl’s, the venerable New York-based purveyor of fine quality skincare preparations is proud to offer its cherished patrons a sensorial trip around the world through the introduction of its efficacious, scented body collection, Aromatic Blends^TM.

With each scent pairing, Aromatic Blends^TM, takes customers on a wonderful journey to the source of Kiehl’s ingredients – the lush countryside of Provence, a desert oasis in Morocco, the dense jungle of Uganda and the tranquil gardens of Japan – while simultaneously delivering high performance skincare.

For Kiehl’s, Aromatic Blends^TM represents the company’s authentic apothecary heritage of inspiring fragrance blends, utilizing sustainable sourcing methods, the finest natural ingredients, and the latest in science and technology for use in its formulations.

Each Aromatic Blends^TM scent (found in the Fragrance, Cleansers & Body Lotions) was formulated with fewer ingredients than found in traditional fragrances, using higher proportions of each key ingredient.

Fragrance: a pure and sensual fragrance crafted with a strong focus on the quality of two unique key ingredients for a simple, clear, yet sophisticated construction.

Skin-Softening Body Cleanser: this rich, lathering, foaming body cleanser, formulated without sulfates, gently cleanses and conditions the skin. Proven to offer 24 hours of skin softness.

Skin-Softening Body Lotion: inspired by the hydrating performance of Kiehl’s iconic Crème de Corps body lotion, this superbly hydrating and soothing body lotion is proven to deliver 24 hours of hydration and nourishment to the skin – without the use of silicones.

KIEHL’S HISTORY OF ORIGINAL FRGRANCES

When the original Kiehl’s Pharmacy was founded in 1851, it quickly developed a reputation for supplying New York’s citizenry with some of the most unique and eclectic fragrant blends, among them Money Drawing Oil, Attraction Oil and Purity Oil.

At the turn of the last century, Kiehl’s was concocting many different essences – 122 to be exact – that were blended by hand for its customers. The first fragrance essence Kiehl’s introduced was Kiehl’s Original Musk oil, in 1921. Its origin is shrouded in myths, but Kiehl’s lore has it that the fragrance oil was formulated by a relative of the Kiehl’s founding family – an actual Russian prince! Kiehl’s Original Musk Oil is believed to be the first incarnation of a musk scent ever to be offered to the public and has since become a “cult classic”.

Following this iconic scent, decades later Kiehl’s began formulating Coriander, Vanilla, Grapefruit, Amber, Gardenia, Cucumber, Pear, Chinese Flowers and Pour Homme fragrance essences.  In 1979, many of the Kiehl’s fragrance essences were among over 100 formulations and artifacts entered into the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection on original pharmacies.

Today, in response to customer requests and aligned with our tradition of sourcing the finest ingredients, we are proud to introduce this new collection of fragrances and fragrant body formulas. Since its early days as a neighborhood apothecary, Kiehl’s has searched the world over to bring its customers efficacious, natural ingredients to meet their distinctive skin, hair and body care needs.

This tradition of listening to our customers is part of Kiehl’s unique fragrance development process, the goal here was to create fragrances that are of the highest quality with simple, clear and unique constructions, where customers can truly experience the purity of the fragrances.

The fragrance found in the body mists and subsequently adapted for the cleansers and body lotions was formulated with fewer ingredients than found in traditional fragrances, using higher proportions of each key ingredient.  The resulting scent reflects a truer rendition.

We wanted fragrances that expressed the sourcing stories behind each aromatic choice, with specific recognizable scents. This will help make Aromatic Blends more distinctive to our customers.

KIEHL’S DIVERSE & RESPONSIBLE SOURCING PHILOSOPHIES

There are four collections within the Aromatic Blends^TM family. Each collection has a unique sourcing location or sourcing inspiration. In order to deliver the purest scent expression of each aromatic blend, Kiehl’s utilizes a variety of responsible sourcing philosophies to craft aromas that represent each unique ingredient in their purest, most efficacious state.

This approach to achieving “aromatic efficacy” includes:

Natural Ingredient Extraction: on-site extraction method using only steamed water to capture essential oils directly after harvesting the ingredients, while they deliver their freshest and strongest aromas.

Sustainable Sourcing: harvesting naturals from sustainable farms that provide ongoing local community support.

Aromatic Reproduction: technique that recreates ingredient scents without destroying the plants and allows the aromas specific to a locality to be faithfully captured.

NASHI BLOSSOM & PINK GRAPEFRUIT

Kiehl’s research showed that some of the most alluring scents around the world are derived from the most delicate ingredients.

Kiehl’s fell in love with the Nashi Blossom and Pink Grapefruit scents for their unique and distinctive qualities. Kiehl’s was able to use natural extraction for the Pink Grapefruit, however, Nashi Blossom was far too delicate for a typical extraction. This unmistakable scent required an advanced aromatic reproduction.

Kiehl’s utilized a unique extraction technology where odorous molecules can be extracted at room temperature but under precise pressure conditions.

The Nashi Blossom is too fragile to undergo any form of processing. We used a unique extraction technology with a more durable ingredient, ginger, whose aromas helped to strengthen the reproduction of the Nashi Blossom, making it an absolutely pure interpretation of the bloom, the resulting scent is enchanting and joyful as Pink Grapefruit mingles with petally flowers.

Nashi Blossom

Origin: The flower of a pear tree that blooms in many traditional Japanese gardens in Kyoto.

Aromatic approach: Due to the delicate nature of this flower, Kiehl’s used a unique extraction technique of other naturals to recreate this plant’s unique aromatic qualities – soft, floral, fresh.

Pink Grapefruit

Origin: A refreshing and juicy citrus fruit native to Brazil.

Aromatic approach: Both the rind and pulp of the Grapefruit deliver disparate aromatic qualities – bitterness and freshness. Kiehl’s has incorporated these two aspects to create a unique Grapefruit blend in our fragrance.

ORANGE FLOWER & LYCHEE

When Kiehl’s was sourcing the world over to find natural, yet efficacious ingredients, the team was introduced to a unique orange blossom essence. This blend was so special and exceptionally fragrant because it was formulated using three different parts of the Bitter Orange tree vs. the typical single orange essence

The Bitter Orange tree is known to produce oranges that deliver a more potent “orange” aroma.  By incorporating the stem, leaf and flower in developing our orange flower aroma, Kiehl’s ensures the purest scent expression.

The Orange Flower and Lychee recreates the atmosphere of late afternoon in a Moroccan garden. The Orange Tree absorbs the warmth of the sun during the day then exudes its strong distinctive essences as the air begins to cool in the evening, while the Lychee lends a soft and sweet aroma reminiscent of the roses growing nearby.

Orange Flower

Origin: A flower from the Bitter Orange tree native to Morocco.

Aromatic approach: The Bitter Orange tree is known to produce oranges that deliver a more potent “orange” aroma.  By incorporating the stem, leaf and flower in developing our orange flower aroma, we ensure the purest scent expression.

Lychee

Origin: A subtropical, sweet, refreshing fruit native to China.

Aromatic approach: To capture the juicy, freshness of a just-opened lychee. This fresh fruit cannot be removed from its natural habitat so to preserve the scent’s purity, Kiehl’s uses a blend of ingredients to recreate its aroma.

VANILLA & CEDARWOOD

When sourcing ingredients for its high quality preparations, Kiehl’s aims for fair-trade and sustainable sourcing, when possible.

In its sourcing efforts for Aromatic Blends^TM, through its suppliers, Kiehl’s was introduced to a special location in Uganda, a community producing a superior natural vanilla oil.  Kiehl’s suppliers work with this community to cultivate high quality vanilla, through a program that embodies the concepts of corporate social responsibility, helping to institute social change across 6500 vanilla farms.

This sustainable sourcing program provides on-going social assistance for the vanilla farmers including the installation of drinking water wells, education through techniques of cultivation and harvest, fair-trade pricing and establishment of a financial banking system that provides micro-loans to local families. Kiehl’s goal to always use the finest ingredients led the company to select this very special natural vanilla from this Uganda community.

This Ugandan vanilla with its smooth, nearly smoky aroma is distinctive and rare and is a direct contrast to commonly and commercially used vanilla extract, which is more sweet and floral.

The Vanilla & Cedarwood scent is a delicate balance of yin & yang, one part feminine from the Uganda Vanilla, smooth, smoky and just slightly sweet; one part masculine from the Virginia Cedarwood, raw and earthy.  Together they blend to form a fragrance that is dynamically simple and irresistibly universal.

Vanilla

Origin: A vanilla bean sourced from sustainable farms in Uganda.

Aromatic approach: This Ugandan vanilla bean has a smooth, nearly smoky quality compared to traditional, commercial vanilla beans that are sweeter and almost floral.

Cedarwood

Origin: This sustainably sourced ingredient is native to the dense Cedarwood forests of the southern United States.

Aromatic approach: Adds a distinctive woody aspect. The varieties from this part of the world give off a smoky, almost tobacco-like scent resulting from proximity to many tobacco farms in the area.

FIG LEAF & SAGE

Kiehl’s chemists make great efforts to develop efficacious, no-nonsense formulations utilizing only the finest ingredients. When seeking to launch the Fig Leaf and Sage fragrance, Kiehl’s wanted to mirror that authenticity.

In search of the purest scent expression, Kiehl’s was looking to capture not only an ingredient’s original scent, but the impact that ingredient had on the surrounding environment.  To achieve this, Kiehl’s found a perfumer who spent his childhood in Provence.  This fragrance captured the aroma of Provence and is intended to evoke or even create a memory for each Kiehl’s patron.

The Fig Leaf & Sage unique scent is best described as spring in Provence, reminiscent of the French countryside.  The scent expression is not merely that of a fig, but is a combination of the scent of the air beneath the fig trees and the delicate aromas of the herbs in the surrounding fields.

Fig Leaf

Origin: A fruit with unique aromatic qualities native to the Provence region in France.

Aromatic approach: The figs of this region were chosen for their green, pulpy qualities – unlike those from other regions that are usually milky and sweet.  Because of the delicate nature of this fruit, Kiehl’s recreated its attributes to deliver an aroma that is truer to those native to Provence region.

Sage

Origin: A green herb native to the temperate climates of the Northern Mediterranean coast.

Aromatic approach: Known for their sweet, nutty scent, the sage in Kiehl’s blend was extracted to deliver a unique herbaceous quality to the fragrance.

In its sourcing efforts for Aromatic Blends™ Vanilla & Cedarwood collection, through its suppliers, Kiehl’s was introduced to a special location in Uganda, a community producing a superior natural vanilla oil.
